Solanum lycopersicum. Mortgage Lifter Tomato is a legendary heirloom variety developed in the 1930s by Mr. Byles of West Virginia. Famous for producing enormous pink-red fruits and exceptional yields, this variety earned its name after Byles reportedly paid off his mortgage through tomato plant sales. The large beefsteak tomatoes often weigh 1–2 pounds and feature rich, sweet flavor with few seeds and plenty of meaty flesh. Excellent for slicing, sandwiches, salads, canning, and fresh eating. Vigorous indeterminate plants continue producing throughout the growing season.
