Allium cepa var. aggregatum (I’itoi). A traditional heirloom onion grown for generations in the Southwest. These unique multiplying onions grow in clusters underground, producing more bulbs each year once established.
I’itoi onions multiply below the soil, forming tight clumps of small, flavorful bulbs. The green tops can be harvested like chives, while the bulbs can be used fresh in cooking.
These starter-size bulbs establish quickly and begin multiplying, making them perfect for building your own perennial onion patch.

How to Grow I’itoi Multiplying Onions
Planting Depth: 1–2 inches
Spacing: 2–4 inches apart
Row Spacing: 12–18 inches

Planting Tips:
Plant bulbs in well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Place bulbs 1–2 inches deep with the pointed end facing up. Water lightly after planting and keep soil slightly moist until established. Once growing, I’itoi onions require very little care and will multiply underground each season. Clumps can be divided and replanted to expand your patch or shared with others. Harvest green tops as needed or dig bulbs once clusters have formed.
