Brassica oleracea var. italica. Waltham 29 Broccoli is a classic heirloom broccoli variety known for its flavorful green heads, cold tolerance, and dependable garden performance. Developed for cool-season growing, this productive variety is an excellent choice for both spring and fall vegetable gardens.
Waltham 29 produces a large central broccoli head followed by smaller side shoots after the main head is harvested. Regular harvesting of these side shoots can extend production and provide additional fresh broccoli. The tender florets are excellent eaten fresh or steamed, roasted, sautéed, or added to soups and other cooked dishes.

Planting Tips:
Start Waltham 29 Broccoli seeds indoors approximately 6–8 weeks before your last expected spring frost, or direct sow outdoors when the soil can be worked. For a fall broccoli crop, sow seeds in summer so plants mature as temperatures begin to cool.
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in a location receiving full sun. Keep the soil consistently moist and provide adequate spacing between plants to encourage strong growth and good head development.
Harvest the main broccoli head while the buds are still tight and firm and before the yellow flowers begin to open. Cut the central head while leaving the plant in place. Smaller side shoots can continue developing and may be harvested as they reach a usable size.
🥦 Excellent Cool-Season Broccoli: Waltham 29 is well suited to spring and fall gardens and is valued for its cold tolerance, flavorful heads, and continued production of side shoots after the main harvest.
🌱 Container Growing: Waltham 29 Broccoli can be grown in containers, but give each plant plenty of room. A large container with good drainage is recommended.
