Beta vulgaris. Detroit Dark Red is a classic beet variety producing smooth, round roots with deep red skin and rich, dark red flesh. The roots have a sweet, earthy flavor and are excellent for fresh eating, roasting, pickling, canning, and storing. The nutritious green tops are also edible and can be harvested young for salads or cooked as greens. A dependable dual-use crop for gardeners wanting both edible roots and greens.

Planting Tips:
Sow Detroit Dark Red beet seeds directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Additional plantings can be made throughout the cool growing season, including late summer for a fall crop. Plant in loose, fertile, well-drained soil and keep evenly watered as roots develop. Beet seeds can produce more than one seedling, so thin young plants as needed to give the roots room to develop. Harvest roots when they reach the desired size. For storage, harvest mature roots before the ground freezes, trim the tops, and keep them in cool, humid conditions.
