Thymus vulgaris. A classic culinary herb known for its rich aroma and earthy, slightly minty flavor. Common thyme forms low-growing, woody plants with small, fragrant green leaves that are perfect for seasoning meats, soups, and roasted vegetables. In summer, plants produce delicate pale purple to pink flowers that attract bees and other beneficial pollinators. Drought-tolerant and easy to grow, thyme is an excellent choice for herb gardens, borders, and containers.
🌱 Growing Information
How to Grow Common Thyme from Seed
Planting Depth: Surface sow or lightly press into soil
Seed Spacing: 6–8 inches
Row Spacing: 12–18 inches
Germination Time: 14–28 days
Days to Harvest: 75–90 days
Sun Requirements: Full Sun
Planting Tips:
Start seeds indoors 6–10 weeks before your last frost date, as thyme can be slow to germinate. Do not cover seeds deeply—light helps with germination. Transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants to allow good airflow. Thyme prefers well-drained, slightly dry soil and does not tolerate overwatering. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant. Trim regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent plants from becoming woody.
